Elizabeth Marshall Thomas was a member of an expedition which, under the
auspices of the Peabody Museum of Harvard, went three times to the Kalahari,
spending there about two years in all. "The Harmless People" deals with the
last expedition, whose members had come to know the Bushmen well and learned
many strange things concerning births and deaths, hunting and tracking, marriage,
religion, and great ceremonies.
The Bushmen became individuals to Mrs. Thomas. Mrs. Thomas is not a scientist but a very gifted and acclaimed writer. Although the excerpts, and the book offer valuable anthropological information, it is more art than science. "The Hunters", a film made on the expedition Mrs. Thomas accompanied, won the 1958 Robert J. Flaherty Award. THE HUNTERS by John Marshall
This re-release of an early classic in anthropological film follows the hunt of a giraffe by four men over a five-day period. The film was shot in 1952-53 on the third joint Smithsonian-Harvard Peabody sponsored Marshall family expedition to Africa to study Ju/'hoansi, one of the few surviving groups that lived by hunting - gathering. John Marshall was a young man when he made this, his first feature length film. He was a natural cameraman who found a subject that would dominate the rest of his life. He has since shot over 600,000 feet of film from which 24 films were edited. The value of the footage as an encyclopedia of !Kung life is unequaled by any other body of ethnographic film. The entire series is currently available through DER. A KALAHARI FAMILY, a new Marshall film, will include footage from 1951 to 1994 and is scheduled for release in 1995.
