RIVER ADVENTURES IN ETHIOPIA
Option 1 - The Historic Route

by Adrift Expeditions

Axum
This is a five day guided tour of the northern area of Ethiopia, an immersion in the history of this enchanted land.
Instead of returning to Addis Ababa from Bahir Dar, you will fly on to Gondar (the capital of the empire from 1632 to 1868), and visit the remarkable Fasilides Castle and the church of Debre Berhan Selassie, with the striking painting of angels on it's roof (see the map page in our brochure).

The next day, you fly to Lalibela and spend a full day exploring the eleven rock-hewn churches. Carved entirely from the surrounding stone, these magnificent churches are kept alive by generations of priests who guard the beautiful murals, ornamented crosses and illustrated manuscripts. A flight the following day takes you to Axum, the holy city of Ethiopia that dates back 2000 years to the formation of the empire. Huge stelae (granite monoliths) remain as a reflection of the ancient grandeur, and one fallen and fractured piece is thirty metres in length (the world's largest).

On leaving Axum, you fly back to Addis Ababa for the night before connecting with outbound flights the following day. The price includes all the activities mentioned, internal flights, transfers, transport, guide and entrance fees (please note that the tour is operated and run by our ground operator and not Adrift). We use tourist class accommodation on a twin shared basis with full board (except in Addis Ababa where meals are not included in the price). Most accommodation is modest and does not always include an en suite bathroom.
