Adrift, the international whitewater specialist, have introduced a two-day river trip near the source of the Nile in Uganda. Following on from the spectacular one-day trip introduced last year, the company now offers guests the chance to experience the magic of camping overnight on a large jungle covered island in the middle of the river. David Tofler, Operations Manager for Adrift in Uganda said ‘the experience is in a class of it's own. During daylight hours we run the most exciting sections of rapids rafted anywhere in the world and in the late afternoon drift into a beautiful campsite to the sounds of the African bush. Boat trips on the Nile in Egypt have become very popular but this part of the river is virtually unknown. It is the wild, untamed source of the world's longest river and is a real gem for adventure seekers’.

In July 1996, Adrift made the first ever descent of the Victoria Nile which included a 10-day trip through the heart of Murchison Falls National Park closing the final chapter on the exploration of the Nile. This trip is now on offer with the first scheduled departures starting in November of this year. Adrift founder and director Cam McLeay has been exploring rivers world-wide for over fifteen years and claimed that this is the river he has been looking for. ‘Nowhere have I seen a river with such prolific birdlife, beautiful vistas at every turn and the most powerful rapids I have ever experienced’.

ETHIOPIA EXPLORATORY

Adrift are running an exploratory trip on the Lower reaches of the Omo river downstream from Omo Mursi departing Addis Ababa in November of this year. The exploratory trip will continue beyond the stretch of river run commercially by Adrift since May 1995 and travel through the territories of the Karo, Surma and Bumi tribal people.

Adrift have run exploratory trips all over the world and are constantly on the look out for challenging new and remote river journeys. Last year for the first time Adrift offered the opportunity for guests to apply to join the exploratory team exploring a series of rivers in Ecuador, which proved to be a huge success.

NEPAL RAFTING & KAYAKING NUMBERS ON THE UP

Adrift, the global river journey specialists, believes that the consistent increase in popularity of rafting & kayaking in Nepal will continue. This growth has been fuelled by a growing trend towards active adventure travel and an increased awareness of river journeys by the international consumer in general. Tourism is currently Nepal’s second largest source of income after foreign aid and rafting & kayaking are Nepal’s second most popular tourist activity after trekking. Rafting numbers in Nepal were up 32% year on year in 1996.

The 1997 Spring whitewater season has now come to a close and reported excellent weather conditions, good water levels and record tiger sightings at Bardia National Park on post river safaris. There is still availability on the most of Adrift’s Summer departures on the Sun Kosi and Karnali rivers between August and December.
