"WAMPANA - WALLABY DREAMING"

Story (as told by artist): The wallabies were carrying Yarripiri Snake Dreaming on their heads. They were joined at Miya Miya by Wankilpa, the seed thrower who went "wrong way" with a nagala, his mother-in-law! At Miyi Miya, the site of the Digging Stick Women, the wallabies held a Jardiwanpa, the fire ceremony for settling disputes that belong to the Jupurrurula/Jakamarra and their sisters.
Story expansion: There are very strong restrictions controlling a man's relationship with his mother-in-law. Wankilpa's going "wrong way" may indicate that he committed a prohibited act. The oval in the center of the painting symbolizes the location of the Jardiwanpa ceremony. The four lines are the paths the wallabies travelled to get to the ceremonial ground.
