"ANCESTRAL STORIES-1"
© Willie Gudabi/Moima

About the painting: Willie Gudabi has the spiritual responsibility for maintaining young men's initiation ritual and mortuary ceremonies. He is also concerned with the proper boundary definitions between different types of beings. Each patch in this piece contains a segment of a traditional law story. The segments may or may not be related to the same law. The presence of human figures indicates that a ritual is in preparation or underway.
About the artist: Willie Gudabi felt a calling to use painting as the medium to express aboriginal beliefs to the "outside world" and began painting in the late 1980's. Because he works with is wife, Moima, many pieces concern women's ritual.
